More Than 1 Lakh Chakma Hajongs Might Enter Assam, Claims Upamanyu Hazarika

Senior advocate of Supreme Court and Convenor of Prabajan Virodhi Mancha, Upamanyu Hazarika has expressed concern that more than 1 lakh Chakma Hajongs might enter Assam if they are given citizenship by the Central Government.
Addressing a press conference recently, Hazarika said, ‘Even though Chakma Hajongs are mainly based in Arunachal Pradesh, Arunachal government won’t give them the right to buy land. So they will look towards settling down in other states. Assam will be the most favourable destination for them for multiple reasons. ‘
He added that political leaders from Assam should take cue from their counterparts in Arunachal Pradesh and oppose this development. Hazarika also maintains that taking 1951 as the base year,  land rights and government jobs should be secured only for indigenous people.
